🎧The Wine Makers – Justin Ennis, Freestone Winery, Joseph Phelps
Winemaker Justin Ennis crafts Freestone wines with a deep attention to detail, capturing the distinct character of each vineyard while balancing the vibrancy of the terroir with a refined, elegant structure. Now, that deep-rooted vision comes to market, as Justin and the winery introduce these vineyard-driven wines to a broader audience for the first time. “Everything begins in the vineyard. Through hands-on farming and careful attention, we work to bring in fruit that’s expressive and healthy. In the cellar, I practice minimal intervention winemaking so that the site, the varietal, the clone, and the vintage can speak for themselves,” said Ennis. “The wine is already in the vineyard; my job is simply not to get in its way.” In the 1990s, Joseph Phelps and his son Bill set out to find a place in California’s wine country where they could produce superlative Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The search led him to a place no one suspected – a tiny, unincorporated town called Freestone, tucked a

Chillable Red Wines Perfect for Summer
Yes, I love rosé for all my summer fun. I mean is there anything better at the beach or the lake? And I definitely drink more white and sparkling wine these days than red. But even with all of that, I still enjoy a fair amount of red wine. Yes - even in the ridiculously hot and humid Houston summer. So finding some chillable red wines is absolutely essential. Even at the lake, sometimes you just want a glass of red wine! Not every red wine shows well when it’s chilled. Chillable red wines tend to have a few things in common. They have lower alcohol, lower tannin level, high acidity, pronounced fruit flavor, and overall tend to be lighter-bodied. Save that tannic Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for another time. A cold tannin can taste bitter and who wants that? Typically, red wine should be served between 55 and 65 degrees. It should be cool to the touch, which incidentally is a sore subject for me. It drives me batshit crazy when I go to restaurants and they bring me a bottle of red wine

Whiskey Review: Bardstown Bourbon Company Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Introduction Today we’re revisiting Bardstown Bourbon Company Bottled in Bond Bourbon , a bottle that longtime listeners of Film & Whiskey may recognize from a previous review. Originally released as part of Bardstown’s Origin Series , the whiskey has since been rebranded with new labels, fonts, and packaging , now standing on its own as the company’s baseline Bottled in Bond offering. For those unfamiliar, Bottled in Bond means the bourbon must follow strict regulations: it must be distilled in a single season, aged at least four years, bottled at 100 proof , and produced by a single distillery under government supervision. In this case, Bardstown Bourbon Company distilled and produced the whiskey themselves. This expression is a six-year bourbon with a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley , making it a wheated Bottled in Bond bourbon . The MSRP sits around $49.99 , putting it right in the increasingly competitive $50 bourbon range. Before divi

Whisky Review: Green River Wheated Full Proof Bourbon
Introduction We’ve tried just about everything Green River has put out over the past couple of years, and more often than not, we’ve walked away impressed. With Aaron Harris steering the ship and Lofted Spirits continuing to expand its footprint alongside Bardstown Bourbon Company, Green River has quietly built one of the more reliable portfolios in American whiskey. Now they’re expanding their Full Proof lineup with Green River Wheated Full Proof Bourbon , following the wheated expression’s win for Best Overall Whiskey at the New York Spirits Competition. That’s a bold move, and a high bar to clear. This batch comes in at 109.3 proof (54.65% ABV) , with a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% wheat, and 9% malted barley , aged between five and seven years , and priced at $49.99 MSRP . On paper, that’s a compelling value in today’s bourbon market. But how does it actually drink? This review is taken from our episode " One Battle After Another (2025) / Gre
